Stephen Hawking worried about AI

According to a BBC report, Stephen Hawking is concerned about AI (artificial intelligence) causing human extinction or something.

Well I’m pretty sure that this is not any kind of immediate concern. We barely have functional AI right now. Certainly nothing commercially available. Yes there are some specialised systems like Watson but no real connection to manufacturing things. Certainly nothing self contained.

There are some concerns about adaptive modelling AI type systems that have the ability to respond to hundreds of variables in infrastructure setting that may make certain kinds of manual jobs automated.

Certainly AIs of the kind found in sci-fi are still considerably far away at least another 20-50 years at a minimum.
